Long thought unsurmountable to adapt to the screen, What If...? is at last getting its moment to shine. Introduced by Jeffrey Orville Wright's Security guard, this enlivened series sees the intergalactic interloper visit entirely manner of alternative worlds in which things happen antitrust that little bit different for our heroes. Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter becomes Captain America, T'Challa is Star-Lord, and zombified Avengers are all coming to Disney Plus.

In the comics, What If?, similar to the MCU cartoon, is all about exploring the worlds of Wonder's Multiverse through the lens of alternate versions of touristed characters and stories. Since its set up in 1977, the series has presented dozens, if not hundreds, of AL-world visions of Wonder heroes, some of them wildly polar from their mainstream counterparts – and some of whom hold eve made it into the core Marvel World for a time.

The first season is just scratching the surface; in that location are all manner of storytelling possibilities in Marvel's back catalog. With that in mind, we've handpicked five What If...? scenarios ripped from the panels that would be ripe for a small-covert adaptation. One matter to note: Marvel inconsiderately picked some ideas for their former movies and shows – one time considered far-fetched, a former What If? scenario that saw Jane Foster deemed worthy to lift Mjolnir is now beingness transplanted wholesale by Taika Waititi into Thor: Love And Thunder. Unheeding, that still leaves America with whole sle of taking episode ideas.

What if Loki constitute Mjölni? (Vol 1 issue 47, October 1984)

We've seen this ill at in the Loki series on Disney Plus, we a Loki Variant wielding Thor's forge, just an entire episode on the character would personify very, selfsame interesting. Loki's jealousy of Thor has been frank from the get-run along, managing to manipulate the God of Thunder into losing his way with just a couple of wicked words and a hook of magic. Imagine what he could DO were he deemed worthy to lift Mjolnir.

Actually, we father't need to think; as he makes earn in Avengers Assemble, he considers himself the boot to the ants that are humanity, and intends to rule in and of itself. We rear't imagine the Avengers would represent too happy about that, but we throne't get wind them permanent against an empowered Loki and the mobilized forces of Asgard.

Oddly enough, this is also a real-life What If? scenario – Tom Hiddleston actually test-tested for the role of Thor way back when, and even more incongruously, he looked the part.

What if the Visual sense destroyed the Avengers? (Vol 2 event 5, November 1989)

Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Ideate if Wanda and Pietro Maximoff hadn't had that last-minute crisis of moral sense and prevented Ultron's transfer into Vision's body. Operating theater what if, instead of choosing to team up with the Avengers, he decided that they were a menace to humanity, and just had to be eradicated?

Whether Vision could actually do so is another issue. Thor would likely prove to be an obstacle, Eastern Samoa would Iron Man and Giant, but let's just enjoin helium managed it. An Ultron-possessed Vision would atomic number 4 a lethal prospect, and would probably spell out doom for the globe. There would be a nice old battle, peradventure, with the fewer heroes powerful enough to put over a meaningful oppositeness (Doctor Strange for nonpareil, and Notch Fury might deem this an emergency worthy of summoning Captain Marvel to Earth).

As for when Thanos and co. lastly turn up – fortunate, let's barely say Ultron/Vision would represent much less obliging to have the Judgment Stone mangled from their head than his regular MCU counterpart.

What if Tony Stark became Sorcerer Supreme? (Vol 2 issue 113, October 1998)

Avengers: Infinity War

(Image recognition: Wonder Studios/Disney)

We've already seen from their pithy exchanges just how similar Tony Sodding and Steven Strange are, loathe though they would undoubtedly be to admit it. So would we equal observe if Tony donned the Cloak of Levitation and Optic of Agamotto?

The comic sees Tony mixing magic with applied science in order to struggle Dormammu. There are elements that wouldn't read well to the small screen (as much as they dislike apiece other, we can't see Stephen Strange revealing Stark like in the comics), but imagine the spectacle.

Now, gues Tony's reaction upon realizing just what he's adequate of. In the original Iron out Man, watching Tony act like a kid-in-a-toy sta joy with each unused discovery ("Yeah, I can fly") is extremely fun. Gues how happy he's going to embody when he realizes he can magically fill again his martini glass at will?

What if Thanos joined the Avengers? (What If Infinity: Thanos return 1, October 2015)

Thanos

Information technology's jolly unthinkable: what if the Frantic Colossus took up weaponry on the Avengers' broadside?

Even this comic-book scenario comes with oppressive caveats: he gives the Avengers a way to protect Earth mostly done self-pursuit, American Samoa you would look. But in the context of the MCU, there are possibilities. What if, in betwixt wishing the Infinity Stones out of macrocosm and getting decapitated by Thor, he decided to help the Avengers bring everyone back – either in the interests of saving his purple hide, or because he genuinely regretted lobbing Gamora off a mountain and wiping kayoed half of existence?

Just picture it: Thanos throwing himself dispatch the cliff on Vormir systematic to regain the Soul Harlan F. Stone. Or events proceeding exactly like they do in Endgame, only for old Grimace to encounter his past mortal. Think of the smackdown potential. His past self would in all likelihood bring home the bacon, but it would be fortunate worth watching. Genocidal maniac though he may be, there is genuine strong belief behind his actions (however twisted and misguided) and a crumple into vaguely bold territory ISN't completely beyond the region of hypothesis. Nonnegative, "Avengers Assemble" would sound a hell of a mint Thomas More menacing coming from him.

What if Peter Parker became the Punisher? (Vol 11 issue 1, Oct 2018)

The Punisher

(Fancy credit: Netflix)

Seeing as how Marvel rather unceremoniously cut all ties with its Netflix properties – Punisher among them – the chances of Frank Castle or whatever of the Defenders exhibit up are far. Even soh, the possibilities for this one are just too juicy to ignore.

While we seaport't up to now been treated to Spider-Man's rootage story in the MCU, we have a hunch that Uncle Ben meeting his untimely demise is involved. Merely what if, instead of prompting him to hug great responsibility alongside his similarly substantial power, he complete up comely less friendly neighborhood spider and more angry arachnid? Recurring villains like Doctor Octopus, Kraven, and Sandman would likely recur a whole shell out less.

Admittedly, in the linguistic context of the MCU, it's hard to picture. While we could comfortably gues St. Andrew Garfield going iniquity, and have got already seen Tobey Maguire do soh (though we sort of wish we hadn't), Turkey cock Holland fair-and-square doesn't seem to have a unpleasant bone in his consistency. But then again, information technology's always entertaining to watch the nice guys play against type, and we're sure Holland would relish the opportunity. Naturally, he'd probably tell America all about it in press interviews prior to the main event, but hey, that's not our fault.

Neediness more Marvel goodness? Checl out our pieces on everything you need to know all but Marvel Phase 4 and whol the newly Wonder TV shows heading your way of life.
